ASU Art 116 Digital Media

Digital Collages with Adobe Photoshop

Picture
The prompt was to create my ideal sanctuary.

I harkened back to my youth. When I was a child I spent a lot of time outside. I loved being in nature isolated from the chaos of life and a full house.

I filled the space with books because I love to read and learn new information. I added a pendant light, pillows and blanket because I love the irony of indoor comforts outdoors.

My objective was to create a place that I would love to be in. A place I could hide away from my cares and anxieties, and just relax. My concept for this work was to show the duality of my personality. The use of colors, pink and green are complementary colors. The openness of the structure contrasts the intention of isolation. I am an open book but I still need a place to hide.

An Open Book: But You Don't Know Which Page to Turn To

This challenge was to transform a popular logo into a new image. I was intrigued at how Bayer created an image with just the word of their name but showed the purpose of their product by creating a cross a symbol often used in the medical field. Realizing I can use the word Honor in the same way I created my vector image and used colors from the animated series She-ra since her motto is "For the honor of Grayskull."

HONOR
Vector Collage
By Rachel Evans, 2021

In preparation for this piece I reflected on a person or character that is meaningful to me. Someone who represents the actions of my ideals. My children and I have enjoyed watching the She-ra series, the original “She-ra Princess of Power” and the reboot “She-ra and the Princesses of Power.”  We got to meet the woman who voiced the original She-ra at a comic convention. We chatted about how She-ra’s story is different from He-Man because He-man was about Power. Evident in his catch phrase, “I have the power.” While, She-ra’s story is about Honor. Her catchphrase is, “For the honor of Grayskull.” I chose She-ra as my subject, because she is an embodiment of honor. She honored others in the way she fought, never starting violence, only defending. She honored herself by the way she lived true to herself.
With this piece I wanted to highlight the character trait of Honor. In the reboot of “She-ra Princesses of Power” there was a strong element of inclusion. A diverse representation of body types, skin tones, neurodivergence, and orientations were represented in the characters. For this reason I used a pride flag as the background. Through the story She-ra continually denies her needs because she is trying to do everything that she thinks others want of her. She also dangerously believes that she has to take on impossible tasks alone. She-ra is fighting her ex-best friend and nemesis, Catra. Ultimately, she learns that she needs to lean on her friends and that her fight with Catra is really a denial of what she truly wants. She wants to be with Catra, to love and be loved. In honoring herself she ultimately honors others.
There is a lot of movement in the artwork. The background and She-ra's clothing are in motion, representing that honor requires action. The straight rectangle around the subject alludes to the boundaries that society puts on individuals. She-ra extends out of the boundaries. I included meaningful quotes from the show as if it is a movie poster.

These images were inspired by my course: Creative Facilitation and Collaboration.
"The Four Buckets of Facilitation" an illustration of a concept taught by Michael Rohd.
"The answer" was an impactful comment by a student.
"Sketches of Participants" is an effort to capture my delight in sharing the zoom room with such delightful people.

“The Nomadic Experience of a Recently Separated, Yet Happily Integrated Woman.”
Soundwalk,
By Rachel Evans, 2021

The intention with this work is to capture the experience of the artist as she moved through her transition from one location to another. While also capturing the essence of her life transition of marriage to separation.
Sounds were recorded as she packed up from one location, load up, drove and unload at the new location.

Time

TIme. Unlike other dimensions, time is linear, only moving in one direction. As they say, “time marches on.” In this film we captured time by showing objects and people as they change. We examine nature as it moves and changes. We watch a candle burn. Mark the days as they pass. Observe glimpses of the human experience from beginning to end; reminding the viewer that life is eternal now.
As we discussed ways to represent time the concept of beginning and ending emerged as an important part of time. Humans mark time in multiple ways, clocks, calendars, changes in physical traits. Time is experienced in all locations. We collected images from various places, and aspects of human experience.

Mismatch: Religion in the Modern World Part 1
Stop Motion Animation
By Rachel Evans, 2021
The intention of this piece is to highlight the mismatch of our modern world and our natural evolution. The content of the narration is heavy and meaningful. To counter this I chose to use a minimalist art style. The construction paper gives texture to the work and a cohesive color pallet. It is also a medium of elementary art. This helps in making the heaviness of the topic more palatable. Using a presentation that was already written gave a clear direction of what to animate. The challenges were how to portray abstract ideas with paper characters. Collaboration with the author was essential.
